“A smooth controlled decent into place without difficulty or damage.”
Drawing inspiration from the cloud-like structures of Cladonia stellaris (star tipped reindeer lichen), the feathery plumes of the Ptilium crista-castrensis (ostrich plume moss) and the meandering Gaultheria hispidula (creeping snowberry) found in Mi’kma’ki’s / Nova Scotia’s local coastal boreal region and inland woodlands, imagery was created from graphite drawings and developed in large sheets of digitally printed motifs to greet people as they enter the doors of the Halifax Harbourfront Marriott Hotel.
By working within the lobby space of the Marriott, the imagery of the micro worlds of epiphytes (plant forms that grow on the surface of another) and tiny evergreens are enlarged and scrawl across the windows, interweaving themselves through the revolving door. They are beautiful metaphors for symbiotic relationships and remind us that these small ecosystems hold and support us even in the most difficult of times.
Printed in opaque white ink, they are scripted like a love letter, layered with meaning for those who enter.
Created in conjunction with Halifax’s Nocturne Festival in 2024. The work is installed permanently on the doors of the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel
